Hot chocolate season is here, and we are very happy about it. These are three places in Munich where we go as a family when the weather turns cold: two in Neuhausen and one near Josephsplatz. Each has a different feel, so we have said what we like about each one and what we could not confirm. Opening times change, so please check before you set off.

Madam Anna Ekke, Neuhausen

Delicious cakes and a little corner with books, small toys and arts and crafts for kids. There is also a big area with lots of room to sit, which makes it a great spot for group get-togethers. The café describes itself as a family café, and that matches how it feels when we are there.

  • Address: Schlörstraße 11, 80634 München
  • Hours: the café’s own website lists Monday to Saturday 9:00–22:00 and Sunday 9:00–18:00. Check current hours before visiting
  • Booking: there is an online table booking button on the café’s website, handy if you are coming with a group
  • Good to know: Madam Anna Ekke is listed at more than one address in Munich, so make sure you are heading to the Neuhausen one
  • Not confirmed: getting there by public transport, toilets, baby changing and step-free access. Call ahead if you need any of these

Café Tribeca, Neuhausen

This is a café for when we want more than a hot chocolate. It does one of the best quiches in Munich, in our opinion, and a great Greek iced coffee if you are feeling coffee more than hot chocolate. There is a kids’ section with books and small toys.

  • Address: Klugstraße 134/136, 80637 München
  • Hours: a directory listing gives daily 9:00–18:00, with possible exceptions, but we could not confirm this on the café’s own site. Check current hours before visiting
  • Not confirmed: getting there by public transport, toilets, baby changing and step-free access

The Munich Readery, near Josephsplatz

A second-hand English bookstore with a small in-house café serving coffee, tea and hot chocolate. It is very relaxed, centrally located and great for book lovers. If your children are happy with a book and a drink, this is an easy hour.

  • Address: Augustenstraße 104, 80798 München
  • Getting there: one local guide suggests the U2 to Theresienstraße, then a short walk north. Check your route before you go
  • Hours: check current hours before visiting. The bookshop and café may keep different hours
  • Not confirmed: the full café menu, toilets, baby changing and step-free access
